Men’s hair loss is a very common problem for men. Almost 40% of men will suffer from hair loss and it is more common in men over 60 years old. Over 50% of these men will experience total baldness.

There are things a man can do to hide the problem such as getting a short hair cut for thinning hair or shaving their head completely which is becoming more popular these days. Knowing what causes this problem and what treatments are available can help as well.

Causes of Men’s Hair Loss

  • Aging – Hair loss can happen for many men between the ages of 20 and 50 years old; however, the advanced stages of hair loss show more and more as the man ages.
  • Chemicals – Mens hair loss can result from the processing of hair such as perms, coloring and bleaching.
  • Medication – Certain medications can cause hair loss in men such as anticoagulants, amphetamines, antidepressants, antibiotics, arthritis medications, ulcer medications, high blood pressure medications and blood thinners.
  • Radiation – Treatments for cancer such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy result in dramatic hair loss. That is because these treatments stop the growth process of hair follicles so all hair strands are shed at the same time.
  • Heredity – Genetic predisposition known as Androgenetic Alopecia can cause male pattern baldness which is passed down from generation to generation. This also explains a cause of women and hair loss.

Types of Hair Loss in Men

  • Male Pattern Baldness – The most common men’s hair loss type which is the result of testosterone being converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) because of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. DHT chokes the follicles and weakens the hair resulting in hair loss.
  • Telogen Effluvium – This is due to severe stress which forces hair follicles to go into the resting phase and shed at the same time.

Hair Loss Treatments for Men

  • There are several options for mens hair loss which include medication which reverses the hair loss and hair treatments such as natural fiber sprays, hair thickeners and scalp concealers. These treatments improve the appearance of the hair.
  • A scalp massage daily can help to stimulate blood circulation to the hair follicles and stimulate hair re-growth in mild cases. Electric massagers can be purchased for this.
  • Certain herbs can help such as Saw Palmetto which is an herb that decreases the DHT in male pattern baldness and because of it being an anti androgen agent, it can prevent hair loss and strengthen hair follicles.
  • Drinking plenty of water every day can help as well. Water maintains balance in the body and flushes out harmful toxins which can lead to hair loss.

Mens hair loss does not have to be a problem because of the wide variety of treatments out there. Doing a little research on the cause of your specific hair loss and finding a treatment that is right for you is your best bet in combating this problem.
